Bacteriostatic water is sterile, non-pyrogenic water with 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol suppresses microbial growth, which is what lets a multi-dose vial be re-entered for repeated draws. In the laboratory it is the standard diluent used to reconstitute lyophilized research peptides into solution. It is a consumable, not a research compound itself.

Unopened, it lasts until the printed expiry, commonly two to three years. The only substantive difference is the preservative. Sterile Water for Injection has no preservative and is single-use.
